History of the Fringe Festival

The Edinburgh Fringe Festival dates to 1947 when eight theatre groups performed at the Edinburgh International Festival. Back in the time, the Edinburgh International Festival was created to enrich and celebrate European culture, in the wake of the Second World War. The eight theatre groups weren’t originally part of the official festival programme but went on to stage their shows on the fringe, leading to a spontaneous artistic movement and the present-day festival name, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Since then, millions have made their way to enjoy the art of every genre at the world-renowned festival.
